When You Reach Me – (Book) Review

Sunday Aug 2, 2009

whenyoureachmeFirst, let me start by saying that When You Reach Me is one of my favorite book titles ever.  It’s simple, elegant, and intruiging.  And you know?  That’s a good summarization of the book.

Twelve year old protagonist Miranda is in middle school, caught in a storm of change.  Her mother has a new boyfriend, her best friend (since forever) has called it quits on the friendship, and she has started receiving strange messages from someone.

Like all good books, to tell you more would give away too much.  The protagonist has to deal with several Very Big Issues, including Racism, Classism, Bullying, and Death.  When You Reach Me is YA fiction with a nice, soft layer of Fantasy.  It’s subtle and you might miss it, but that makes it all the better.

I heard about this book from someone on twitter, I think.  They linked to a review from The Library School Journal.  THIS review, in fact.  As soon as I read the review, I just had to read this book.

So, seriously, check out THIS REVIEW, and then pick up a copy of When You Reach Me for yourself, because you’ll read it, and want to read it again and again.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
